Dry ice blasting propels rice-sized pellets of solid COβ (β109Β°F) at high speed. Three things happen at once: the impact cracks the contaminant, the extreme cold makes it brittle and breaks its bond, and the pellet instantly sublimates β turns straight to gas β expanding roughly 800Γ in volume and lifting the contaminant off the surface. What's left is a clean, dry surface and the debris we removed, which we collect.
Sand and other media are abrasive β they erode the surface along with the contaminant and leave spent media everywhere. Dry ice is soft (about 1.5β2 on the Mohs hardness scale), non-abrasive, and vanishes as gas.
